put a diesel in a 77' f250

First timer here! Just wanted to know if any of you have seen or heard of putting a powerstoke in a 1977 F250. Can it be done, will the engine mounts work? WILL THE FRAME HANDLE IT?

welcome to the site bambam! you didn't specify which engine you'd want, i'm assuming you'd go with a mid 90's 7.3 id take a look and compare the 460 gas and 7.3 diesel mounts and other engine related parts out of the mid 90's trucks since they made them both work in the same truck, and i know the 460 was available back in the 70's so there must be some evolution of parts there that you can work with as far as the engine mounts that would make it pratically a bolt in procces up front. the tricky part would be the trans and possibly the 4x4 (if you are going the route) will the 7.3 and late 460 bolt to the same bell housing? are you going manual or auto? are you going with or without the intercooler?

I love the late 70's Fords, my Dad got a '79 F-250 super cab long bed 2 wheel drive with a 460 and auto tranny back when i was 7 years old, in a short time i wanted that truck or one like it. So i got the truck you see in my signature, basicly the modern interpretation of my dad's truck but with 4 wheel drive.

let us know what you are working with. Do you have the truck already? ask us as many questions as you need. this sounds like a fun project

Hey bambam, look in the latest issue of 4 wheel and off road, or off road, one of those. They featured a truck, which I believe was around a '77, give or take a couple of years. The guy put a '97 powerstroke in it, and most of the running gear, and the truck went from regular cab to extended cab. It is a big green truck you can't miss it. The article said he did everything himself but the paint. So I think it answers your question.

Just about anything is possible if you have the time to engineer it correctly and the money too!

it is very possible...your biggest challange will be the wiring and modules....the older the motor you go with...the easier that will be....the PCM looks at multiple imputs, especially with the newer motors....to allow the motor to run right....its nothing near an impossible thing....but it is not an easy task, especially the newer the motor......Marc

Not hard at all, especially if you've got a complete donor truck . We've done several Cummins conversions on them which are too easy, this latest project we picked up a '97 F350 that was wrecked for $1000. We're stuffing the guts into a '77 F350 crew cab. We hope to have it done for SEMA in November. There will be a writeup in Diesel Power and PSR.
