Newbie: Looking to buy a 1996 - help

Hi, I am looking at a 96 that almost looks new. It seems to run great but I have never driven a powerstroke before. It has 167000 miles on it. Is there anything in particular I wouldn't know about to check out before I buy it?

Any help would certianly be appreciated.

Newbie: Looking to buy a 1996 - help please

I'm looking at a 96 that looks almost new. It does have 167000 miles on it. It is a 4x4 automatic extended cab with shell and etc. I just would like to know if there is anything I need to check out on this truck before I buy it. I have never had a diesel before. The price is $9500.

To Powerstroke.org!

How long has the tranny been in it? Is it original or a replacement?
If it's original, be ready to put a new one in soon.
Ask for an oasis report from your local ford dealer.

I'm no expert, but as a novice I can tell you what caught me out. First check the oil level is right, mine was overfilled. Ask when the oil was last changed and the filters. Try the truck, either as a passenger or, if the seller will let you, as a driver. Don't think that just because it runs sweet cold that it will hot, or that because it idles nicely, it will run well under load. Go some distance on your test drive and include a mix of driving conditions. Sniff at the trans dipstick. If it smells really bad, it probably has been over hot at some time.
