what about Springsteen, ZZ top, or Areosmith? IMO they are all better than petty.

For me it's the Eagles. They are a living legend as a group with so many timeless classics and in addition to that they have decades of great songs they each recorded outside the Eagles - Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmidt:
