Bashing the horns
OK Clay, per your recommendations, I took a set of horns out with me last couple times I've been out. It seems funny, I try so hard to be quiet then I start crashing the horns together making a terrific racket.
1st time I tried it, soon as I tucked the horns away, crunch crunch, here comes a midget 8 pointer, Success! 2nd day I tried it, still had the horns in hand, crunch crunch, another midget 8 pointer. Saturday morning, had a 8 pointer with crabclaws and 12" G2's come in to about 10 feet from me first thing in the morning, I passed then as he walked away I wished I didn't, So I grabbed the horns and he paid no attention, just walked away like nothing going on here. Then in comes another tiny 8 pointer, looking around for the fight he just heard. Its my new WeeBuck call. haha. About 10:00, I see a huge 8 pointer about 250yds away across a creek with a doe. I watched for awhile then here comes that crabclawed buck again, he circles the Big 8 and then they started fighting. They were in the wide open across a creek fighting Hard. It was awesome. After about 10 minutes I could take it no more, I decided to climb down and slip in on them. I get all the way down there (running as they were behind some briars now) and they were still fighting. As I was deciding what to do, they quit and walked down and stood in the creek immediately in front of me (but through way too many briars). They were panting and drinking from the creek, the crabclaw buck's face was all bloody from the fight. About that time the wind turned and hit the back of my neck. The doe that they were fighting over hauled a** and they looked over at her and ran with her (No sense in sticking around if the prize leaves). I had no shot as they left. I was back on stand at 1:00, and finally at dark the deer came back around. there was this little buck harrassing does behind me and about dark, this BRUISER comes in, smashes into the little buck and sends him running away. He dwarfed that smaller buck. then he came in on me, about 15 feet away on my right. I ease the ML around (thats my bad side as I'm right handed and so I was all bunched up). I let the smoke roll and he was gone, ran 50yds and piled up. There was Blood everywhere, Mostly mine. Dang scope caught me between the eyes cause I was all bent around funny to shoot. I'll post the pictures tomorrow and I think you can see the mark. |

See, I wouldn't steer you wrong! Glad it worked for yar...yes, the smaller bucks are the first ones to respond to that as they are more inexperienced - haven't had there arse kicked to many times yet and they are more curious than cautious. I on the other hand couldn't call in a buch the other day with any luck at all. Was windy and i think that had alot to do with it. Can't wait to see those pics!! |

OK, here he is, ![]() ![]() Notice a couple things: On me: I'm wearing a turtle fur on my head: Dork hat! I have considered changing religions, note the temporary dot. On the truck: Man its nice. Also see I have the fender delete mod, where the bottom of the bed rusts off (oh, I mean, I removed them on purpose, its much lighter for all the racing I do) On the Deer: Tips of both brow tines are broken off, Most noticeable from the back. tip of left G3 is broken off (and bloody). His right eye is almost swollen shut. A few things you can't see in the picture: He had puncture marks on his front legs. When caped out, we found marks all over his face. so, LOOKS LIKE I SHOT THE LOSER. Now, he wasn't in the fight I saw. I've seen 2 other bucks now, in this immediate area that were big as he and bigger, and I didnt see the deer that whipped up on this one, so I can't wait til next year already. We have the 1 buck rule here in IN, so I'm going to have to. Its going to be a long long year. I'm afraid I may go crazy before then. |

Nice buck man! What'd you take him with? Love to get me one of those someday!!! Nuthin' like that here in Hawaii. We got Blacktail and Axis for deer. Never took a Blacktail yet but those Axis are good eatz! Majority of my hunting is for Feral and Mouflon sheep, Wild hogz, and Feral goats. One of my best friends is from Mississippi (met him in the Air Force, he got out and decided to stay here in Hawaii) so I'm buggin' him to set up a hunt for us.
Congrats on that Buck!!! Here's a pic of what I took a few months ago. Mouflon on the left and a small feral on the right.
