Well just got back from the moring hunt, saw a huge buck, would been in the 180-200 b&c. It was just at sun up, he was at the back of a 50 ac whet field. The range finder said it was 418 yards. I watched him for about an hour, after which he came in closer, range finder again said 365 yards in which i took the shot. and sure enough i missed, i only shoot for the neck so its alot less of a area to hit. But what was weard is he didnt run off, He sprinted to the creek and stayed in the creek for about 30 minutes, i was trying to ge a clear shot but couldnt bcuz of all the trees. And he was way to far at that point, just over 400 yards. even if i could have gotten a shot i would have taken it, I feel that at that distance i couldnt have made a humane shot. so i will go back this afternoon and see if i can get him tonight.

A little advice from an old hunter Bobby - Don't ever limit yourself by 'only' shooting for the neck. Take the shot as it needs to be taken to bring the animal down. In this case a 180-200 B&C is a once in a lifetime buck on the other end of a scope for 99% of hunters. Take the shoulder shot for one because of the distance and for two so as not to damage the cape, because something that large is something you mount. If you're neck shooting because you're worried about loosing the meat you can make the shot just off that shoulder and not loose any meat - plus it gives you more room for error. I'd MUCH rather be off by a couple inches and loose a shoulder of meat but still humanely bring down a 200 B&C than try for a neck shot and miss. |

But my father took another one this moring. I fell asleep in the blind, and woke up to a gun shot. thats one way to get your heart racing! trust me lol. He shot him at 75 yards and droped him with a neck shot. Didnt get a wight but im sure it was over 200lbs. he was 12 points with some kicker. I have some pics but there on regular film so i will have to scan them or take a digital pic of them, eather way i will get a pic.

I agree with alan on this one, my first shot option is ALWAYS a chest shot. Obviously not all situations will give you a perfect shot, but i only take a neck or a head shot if i feel thats all i will be able to get a shot at.
