Shotgun Opinions

Looks like we've got quite a few hunters and gun owners here. Perhaps you guys and gals can offer your opinion on shotguns. I'm looking to buy one (obviously my first one) for home security and shooting clay targets. I've shot before but always with my freinds or my brothers gun.
I know the familiar names like Winchester, Remington, Ruger and Browning. But having never owned one I cannot hold an opinion as to which is best. Super reliable? Easy to clean? Good for the first timer?
Any of you folks with "real world" experience, please offer your opinion.
Thanks!

Hey Steve! I've got a few shotguns actually. I've had my Remington 870 pump since I was about 10 or 11 and it's a very reliable old gun but these day's I tend to use my Ruger Red Label (over/under) for most of what I do - clay's as well as hunting. The Ruger is a bit pricey and kicks a bit so I would shy away from it for a first time, all around shotgun. I bought my daughter a shotgun made by (and in) Verona. I don't have the model on me but I can get it when I get home. Anyway it's VERY well made, automatic, light and has VERY little recoil - not to mention you can get them for a great price new. It's made in Italy and trust me when I say the quality is spectacular and not one single jam. She loves it and I'm even thinking of getting one for myself just to hunt dove with. Actually you can see it on the turkey hunt video I've got posted on this site where she smokes her first gobbler with it.
All that being said you're going to get LOTS of opinions on this, I just threw in three that I own and am very fond of. There are LOTS of good scatter guns on the market, it's just finding one that fits you and your needs best.

I have been shooting clays for a very long time, shot on alot of teems and have done the hard to do 100 strait.. If your new and are looking into a good first gun i would deff say the reminington 1187 or the older 1100, both are great guns with light recoil. both are auto, in 12 or 20, 28 and 410 guages.. BUT if i where you i would get a beretta 390 or the new 391. My comp gun a 391 teknys gold. Its not a cheep gun but i love it.. guns are like cars you mod them the the point its the best thing ever.. but if you want a all around gun look at the beretta 391 sporting. its a GREAT gun with NO recoil. even in the bigger 12 guage shells. my lil 5 year old has even shot some 12 guages with my gun.. You can fnd them for 800 or so, even less for a used one if you can find them. If you have any questions PM me, and i would be more then happy to help ya..

shotgun choices

the 1100 is a very good starter gun and can be used for a long time, my dad still has his and he's not real gentle with it,but it has become a good back up and extra shotgun that has taken it's share of dove and smoke a many a clay. but the beretta 390 is a very sweet choice also. my brother bought a over and under shotgun, that i believe is from russia i can't remember the name though. but for the best bang for the buck you can't go wrong with an 1100, they usually go on sale at wal mart around this time of year. i either use the old 1100 or one of my mossberg 12 ga. nothing fancy just the willingness to put up with a sore shoulder.

I was at WalMart the other day buying some shells and they told me they quit selling firearms...not sure why but they did.

Remington 870 HD(Home Defense). 12ga., super easy to clean/maintain,
mine came with an 18" barrel, but can easily be swapped for the 28" for targets. Also the price is right at around $300.
