I miss elk hunting. I love going up to NW Oregon to hunt for them but Colorado would be awesome. Best of luck to you on the hunt. Take pics!

That's pretty country down there. I've never spent much time around there, just passed through on my way to Mesa Verde.
Unit 76 just to the North of there is one of the prime trophy areas. I've hunted Unit 79 for years, with a strategy of stradling the Unit 76 border in case a trophy came across. Never worked for me, so I have since moved to another area. Welcome to Colorado! Good luck, and have a great hunt. |

So, is it illegal to hunt in another unit? ![]() Here is an overview of the area. I'm not sure the boundaries of 77.

Depends what tag you have. If you have the 2nd rifle Antlerless tag, it is valid in 77, 78, and 771. If you have the OTC bull tag, it is valid in most units, but not in unit 76.

I had a blast but unfortunately I came home with an empty ice chest. I hunted 11 days and saw one cow and her calf. Oly one other guy in my camp saw an elk from about 7-800 yards and closed the distance to about 200 but the bull saw him before he could get a shot. HE wasnt even sure if it was a legal bull or not. That outfitter had 4 drop camps and 1 guided camp that week and nobody killed an elk. I did see a nice 4x4 mule deer but didnt have a tag for it. A guy in the next camp over had a muley tag but never killed one. One guy in the guided camp shot at a muley and hit him in the leg. They finally found what the bears didnt eat the next morning. It was a bad week for everybody.
