what does "common rail" mean? Is that the same thing as saying inline?

no it is how the injection system is example dodge and chevy have been useing high pressure common rail fuel systems for years where as ford has been useing heui systems on the 7.3l and 6.0l they just started useing common rail in the 6.4l the big diff. is that a commnon rail uses a lift pump that feeds a high pressure injection pump that feeds the injectors had little solenoids open and close the injector at the right time and p/w now a ford 6.0l and 7.3l uses hydraulic electronic unit injector where there is a lift pump that feeds the injectors low pressure fuel and there is also high pressure oil pump that feed the injectors high pressure oil the injectors has a solenoid that alows the oil to enter at the right time witch acuates the injector and gives the engine the high pressure fuel it needs. sorry about the lack of grammer.

lol dang I would have never known. That would be pretty cool though if ford built an inline 8 engine. I think straight piped cummins sound badazz!

All injectors are fed by a single rail. Well, on the CR Cummins, its a single rail feeding fuel to 6 injectors, via a high pressure injection pump; a Bosch CP3. On the Duramax, and 6.4, there are actually two rails, one feeding each bank of the engine, being as both are V8s. So on each side of the engine, four injectors are being fed by the single rail, again via the high pressure Bosch CP3...the injectors are fired electronically.

Whereas earlier designs (like the 12 and 24 valve Cummins) typically had a dedicated fuel line running from the injection pump to each injector; in the case of the Cummins, 6 lines for 6 injectors
