Rookie Excursion owner needs mods help

Looking for some input for performance mods on my bone stock 02 7.3 Excursion 4X4. Goal is improved fuel economy while towing and increases in fuel economy for general day to day use. Currently see 17 hwy (18 if I don't go over 1800 rpm) and 12 around town and 10-11 towing a 8500 lb camper. I hear all the time about 20's empty and 15-16 while towing. Truth or BS?

Do intake, exhaust, gauges, and custom chip. That should get what you want. As for other milage you've been hearing im gonna say bs.

a chip, intake and exhaust and go easy on the go pedal and you should see 20+ mpg's

I was bored the other day after reading how to do the 10k mod ect. I went to radio shack and picked up the 10k resistor along with a 4.7k resistor and a switch on off on. I hooked it up thinking it was the dumbest thing ever....and took it out 10k no lope idle and power. 4.7 lope idle and power. Plus smoke....which i dont care for.
