Wheel backspacing

Can some1 explain whats the limits of wheel back spacing I can buy? I do not know much about rim sizes and all. I ask cuase I went to buy a set of 08 rims and they were 17's but they rubbed I guess cuase of backspacing. Can any1 enlighten me on what I should look for and what not 2? thanks

Here is a chart that helps explain offset and backspacing

But as far as the limits go, it would really depend on tire size

Ok The chart helps a little but i guess I asked the wrong question I cant really explain what Im askin really. I just dont want to buy some rims that wont fit.

Easy get rims with no more than factory back space..4.5" and no smaller dia than 16"

So factory backspacing is 4.5"? just dont go bigger then that?
