sediment filters and when to start using cetane booster.

1st question: A friend of mine that has been using tractors for many years filters his fuel with a piece of cloth attached to a funnel. he says it picks up alot of particles and showed me one that had he used recently and it was full of all kinds of black particles and crud. i explained to him that i felt it would look rather silly pumping diesel through a funnel, but nonetheless his suggestion seems logical. does anyone ever do this?

2nd question: when should i start using cetane booster on my new 6.4? should i wait until it breaks in a bit longer, or can i try it on my next fill up? keep in mind that i`m a diesel noob entering into a new realm which will explain these types of questions.
