What scan tool? These new ones any good??

Well lets start with... I have an old Autoxray scan tool. Works good for what I need it. Now I have a 97 Ford powerstroke 7.3 and it does not read it. Or should I say does not read it properly. Truck is running good now so not in a hurry.

I have seen these new scan tools that work with a laptop or Bluetooth. I am not a bluetooth guy. So a cable to a laptop (Or desktop, got one in the garage) would be great. You can pick them up (ebay) for about $20. Then you need decent software to go with them. No freaking clue. Everyone say this program is good but does not do xxx or xxx. Ideas on a good program???

I seen you guys post one (AutoEnginuity with Ford package) Looking about $400. For that price would like to get ABS and trans codes for several vehicles.

I don't mind paying a few bucks but if it will do about the same as what I have, I hate to spend money on a very small upgrade. My old scanner does all the old stuff and OBDII but not the diesels, ABS or Trans stuff.

The AE will read codes for all systems for all domestic vehicles as well as basic sensor outputs.. The specific packages gives you access to the real special stuff like all the diesel related stuff and diagnostic testing. None of the bluetooth apps allow any of that.

My Autoxray is probably 15 years old. I don't think they even support it anymore. Not sure if I want to get a new model, but will look into it. Wasn't sure if there is a software that runs on a computer that will do the special Ford stuff.

Even the new autoxrays apparently cannot read the 7.3.. And having the scanner run off a laptop is 100x better than a little handheld device

Yup AE is definitely the best diagnostic software for the money.
