What happens if its used on the road, say in a private vehicle that isn't being used for profit?

Red diesel is used for agricultural purposes and is usually not filtered like the one from the filling station, that's to say its rather dirty in comparison and blows black and has a red compound mixed to it to identify the difference.

It is a lot cheaper than filling station fuel because there is no tax to pay.

If a normal road diesel vehicle uses red diesel and is caught, there is normally a fine to pay. If a diesel truck blows out dark/black smoke from the exhaust, either there is something wrong with the truck or its using red diesel. This is how troopers know to pull you over.

Got it. There is a station in town that has red and green at the pump and the red is about .25¢ cheaper than green.
