Low Fuel mileage drop?

Hey all, first post here.

I have a 2011 F-350 FX4 Lariat with the 6.7 Turbo.

I have been noticing that when my fuel level drops below the estimated 50 miles to empty and my fuel light comes on, that my mileage (according to the lie-o-meter) drops from around 18.5/19 to somewhere around 15 mpg. Any idea what this is? Is this a way that the computer builds in conservatism so you dont run out of fuel completely?

Just curious. This is the only issue I have noticed with the truck so far. (It has 140K miles on it, I bought it last November)
