What transmission fluid goes in a 1995 E4OD?

My manual is silent regarding trans fluid type, I was wondering what I should put in there when I change the fluid this week. Dextron II was suggested on another site, but I haven't seen Dextron II on the shelf in a LONG time! LOL....

Thanks,

Greg

Notes Fluid Type
Note: Ensure the correct automatic transmission fluid is used. Check the container verify the fluid is MERCON(r) approved. Transmission fluid requirements are indicated on the transmission dipstick handle. MERCON(r) ATF
Note: Use of fluid marked MERCON(r) V may cause internal damage.

mech2161,

Thanks for the intel. I wonder why my manual says nothing about trans service intervals or fluid types?

your manual won't but your maintenace schedule book will.
I would take it to Ford for a fl;ush rather than just a change. It's much better to flush it out. Less than one C note.

Appreciate the info, but..... There is no mention of the tranny fluid type in the maintenance manual either! Crazy.

Plus, I will never flush any automatic transmission. For the same reasons that I will never flush an engine.

Drain, replace filter, and refill should be plenty suffecient.

Good idea, that would make it a little easier to get to the filter, too.....

Greg, dexron II, was replaced by dexron III. The type of fluid used is allmost always stamped into the dipstick. Dropping the pan and changeing the fluid every 25,000 miles is what I do..30 years in the trans business. Preston

Thanks, guys....

I changed the fluid and filter, and cleaned off the magnet. Man, there was a bunch of crud stuck on that thing!

I plan to change the fluid again in a couple thousand miles with the next oil change, as well, and then get on a regular trans fluid change regimen.

Also adding a large cooler soon.

Greg

Ok guys tell me if I used the right fluid. I put in Castrol "Dextron II / Mercon", it was in a black bottle. It said it would fulfill all the requirements for Ford Mercon specifications. I went to Autozone and couldn't find a bottle that just said "Mercon". It's probably ok but I would like to make sure. It's only been in there about 2000 miles.
