New and distraught

Hey everybody, I'm new on here as well as new too fords and diesels. My name is Devon by the way. I just bought a 2002 ford f250 7.3L powerstroke with 160, 000 miles on her and its gonna be my daily driver as well as tow a 12, 000 lb fithwheel during the summer. I'm really thinking about a custom chip from DP Tuner with 60hp tow and 80hp econo. I'm just freaked out about the whole tuner/chip thing hurting something with that many milels on the tranny. I'm the second owner of the truck and I bought it from a small local dealership so don't know about the prior maintenance on it. Do have to to say it seems very well taken of though with no mechanical problems at all and no rust what so ever! Just don't want to overload the 4r100 tranjy with those kinda miles on her. Not a lead foot just looking for better mileage andtowing power. Any opinions or thoughts would be more than weocome.

The 7.3 is a "de-tuned" engine that a little bit of good programming can make safe, and significant, improvements on. The 4R100 is another story It has to be taken care of with good maintenance and, even then, at 160K you're getting close to all you might ask from it...

The two tunes you're talking about would Not be my choice. The DP 80econ has been a Very controversial tune, there are those (whose opinion I respect) that have had Bad experience with it and feel it has timing issues. The 60 Tow, I would Not apply to a 12K load on your truck, with your trans & mileage.

IMHO the PHP 65DD and 12K Tow would be a better choice. FORGET about "economy" there's no significant improvement to be made with tuning, there's just so much you can do with a Heavy Truck, with a Big Block Diesel, and the Aerodynamics of the body. Especially with Towing, 11-17MPG is just a Fact-of-Life

Thanks for your reply NoRalPh, I was actually leaning towards a PHP Pheonix chip but when I called down there a couple of weeks ago they said it was gonna be a 3 month wait just for them to get the chips from the factory. That seems a little exessive for something that should be made by the thousands and thousands per day.
