nub diesel question/ dont kill me.

ok so I am in the market for a diesel truck. Thats good but I have no idea what year or what motor/tranny to get. I want a used good priced vehicle with extra cab 4x4 auto tranny. Now comes the mystery for me. What is the most reliable engine tanny combo out there? Im going used cause im poor but not some 1985 pos. Years 99-03 are in my price reange. I just have no idea where to even start the search. I have tried to read as much info on here as possible but there soo much. Can anyone give me a basic start to my search. Thanks for the time and be gentle on me.

........I'm an expert on the 99-03 7.3s, but will come along soon. I can tell you than if you looking for great MPGs and reliability then the 7.3 is a great place to start
