Shopping for an Excursion 4X4--advice? Weak spots??

I'm presently looking for a good used Excursion 4X4, Diesel of course. I have seen a number advertised w/rebuilt tranny's with mileage in the low 100s. What problems are peculiar to which years? Best engine?? Any other problem areas or weaknesses? I'll be using it to tow my 25' trailer primarily, no commuting or short hauls.Advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

not sure on the 7.3's but on the 03-05 model with the 6.0 head studs stretching is an issue, the trannies in those years are a bit better than the earlier models as long as you arent planning on making big power

Trannies generally aren't a problem. 03+ you'll have a 5 speed over a 4 speed. The 7.3 is the most reliable, and the 6.0 is less reliable but with more power. In a nutshell. You'd probably want a 7.3. If you can find a 03 with a 7.3 (they made em for the first 5 or so months of 03 model) you'll have a 5 speed with it. If your looking for a 6.0 try to find a later yea, 04 is good, 05 is better. Good luck
