Cummins, Why?
I've been thinking about how cool it would be to put a Cummins in the work truck if the 460 ever gave out but then I got thinking what the hell makes the Cummins so great? I really wanna know. Seems today everyone is like oh man I'm just gonna put a Cummins in my truck because its the best engine ever. Is it great because its a I6 or because its called Cummins or both? Now that I think about it I would rather put a slighty built 7.3 PowerStroke in the work truck rather than a Cummins. If I get sick and tired of the 6.0 in my 05 I would put a fully built 7.3 Powerstroke in it with a fully built 4R100. But I still want to know why is the Cummins so great? or at least thats the impression I'm getting.

Built to run for a million miles or more and is almost bullet proof. The I-6 is a great design and it makes a bunch of torque. I love my powerstroke but if I could have chosen a diesel engine in my truck it would have been a Cummins. The Powerstroke is a great engine for stock or slightly modifide but to make serious power is cummins all the way ! ! !

Yep cheap to build and if you have the p7100 pump its easy to turn up the pump for some cheap power. Plus so many more diesel performance shops are out there ready to sell you a Built Cummins. Also there is a lot of history behind Cummins. Clessie Cummins was a pioneer in gettig diesels into big rigs. I own a Cummins and its not in my pickup, but in a 1956 Pete 350 and its a rare Supercharged Cummins. Yes supercharged or "Iron Lung" and it is the loudest coolest engine ever made. It barks howls and roars.
But still I'm glad I got a 7.3l Powerstroke. Nothing runs like a big block diesel V8. |

It's just like why people like building chevy engines because they are cheap

Even if you do find a block your going to pay for it. All because it's not a chevy

sometimes the majority just means all the idiots are on the same side (think about chevy/cummins)

I thought it was because the Cummins has a shorter stroke and more bore. Gives it more low-end torque for towing. The Powerstroke is longer stroke, smaller bore, which should give more HP's.
I'm not quite sure of the differences between inline and V. But having two of something (a V) isn't necessarily better. You'll have to think about balancing the two heads, and you have more parts to break. I also hear the inline is better balanced. I think Cummins might be designed more for heavy duty off road equipment, while Powerstroke is designed for more of the pickup market. |
