Which truck should I buy???

I am currently looking at two trucks. One is a 2005 F250 FX4 XLT supercab w/ 67k mi. The other is a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 4 full door quad cab Laramie (loaded) w/ 90k mi. The F250 is all stock except for a big steel front bumper. It also has a goose neck hitch so it has been used to tow a 5th wheel. Plus I think Fords look alot better than Dodges. The Dodge is all stock except for a leer cap, and turbo gauge and exhaust temp gauge, and never been used for a 5th wheel. Both are asking about the same price, so my question is which one would be more worth it? I am one of those crazy guys who really doesn't NEED a diesel, but I just want one and I'm going to get one b/c I can. It will just be used for weekends, and whenever I take the boat out (only 19'). I just dont want to buy something and then have to turn around and fix abunch of crap on it. I have heard alot about the 6.0L, and know that the cummins is a proven motor, but the mileage is significantly more on the dodge. But the dodge is also much nicer INSIDE and there is more room in it. I posted here b/c it seems that this forum has alot of people that offer alot of good advice, and that is what I need.. I am a diesel newbie. Any help is greatly appreciated!

- Kevin

Well if your one of those crazy guys thats gonna take his boat out and start adding stuff to the truck perforance wise the 6.0 will prob. need head studs later, but its got a lot miles to go before warranty is gone on it, Id go with the Ford but im basis.

Thats kind of a tough decision b/c I like both (rather have a ford anyday but the cummins is also a good motor). I can tell you that with the dodge you will probably have to tear into the tranny (if it hasn't been gone through already). Their tranny's are a weak link. As with the 05 ford only real drawback with it is you might have headgasket problems. A friend of mine has an 06 with 38,000 miles on it and it blew a head gasket. But of course it a had a tuner on it so that probably played a major factor on it. Either one though I wouldn't be afraid to own.

If you actually look inside of both of them, they are about the same size in the back unless it is a mega cab. Less miles on the Ford plus I think fords are built better. The dodge will probably get a little better fuel mileage though. to the ORG

Thanks for the help so far... Also, I plan to keep it completely stock for the most part. Other than prob. a leveling kit and some 315's. I'm not planning on buying any programmers or "suping" it up all. No tranny work has been done to the dodge, only front drive train work and new upper bearings. How much would the new head gaskets on the 6.0L cost roundabout do you think? Thanks again for all the info guys..

I'm not sure on the price for gaskets, my friend had his fixed under warranty. But if I had to replace it would get studs put in.

You are under warranty, so it will only be $100. I would get some studs, and they are around $500 or so. A little pricey it seems, but you wont ever have to worry about them again. Price out of warranty is probably around 2 grand.

Theres a good chance the dodge was tuned if he has boost and EGT guages. Those ram quad cabs have dick all for space in the back seat too.

Dodge Cummins for sure.... But I am biased . Really either one will be a great truck for you. I would go with whichever you think will work best for you..I have heard great things about the 6.0 and then I have heard horrible things about the 6.0. So that would be a toss up . Good luck with the new truck, whatever you get man as long as it is a diesel

Ok thanks again. I have just found a really great deal on a '06 F250 w/ 55k miles. I am probably going to buy a plane ticket tomorrow b/c I can't pass this one up. Question is this though: Does the factory warranty follow the truck or do I have to pay transfer fee/etc. The sales person said that it is covered and I dont have to do anything... This is not a big time dealership either, just a small town used car dealership. I did check out the Carfax on the truck and it checks out fine.
