Being a 7.3 I'd get it warmed up, pull the oil fill cap off and check for excess blow by. Drive it and note the trans shifting, get on it and see if it shifts well.

Other than that, if she runs and drives well it'll probably continue to do so until 300,000 miles or so.

take the oil fill cap off and turn it upside down and set it ontop and see if it blows off , its gonna have some blow by but if it shoots off then you know its bad....i own a 7.3 and 6.0 and would choose the 7.3 any day

if it does not blow off your in great shape..if it shoots off then you need to talk it over and haggle , but if it slides off or something that is normal...excessive wear in the cylinders is the cause of blow by..every diesel is going to have a little bit , its only bad when you know there is alot of blow by and smoke coming out of the oil cap

With 84k miles on it, its probably in excellent shape. Mine has 180k miles on it and runs like new with minimal blow by. You can try the cap thing but these engines vibrate a lot. Just pull it off and if there is a ton of smoke blowing out like an exhaust stack then its bad, if it just slowly comes out then that is fine.

But I'm willing to bet she's in excellet shape.
