do you have to take out the coolant drain plugs in the block to flush the system?

No you don't but you don't get quite as much coolant out when you drain the system, therefore you have to flush more times to make up for it. It takes 6 flushes or 24 gals of distilled to completely flush the system.

If you can't get the plug out you may end up having to do the without draining the block. Make sure you do not do a chemical flush because you will clog your oil cooler. A flush with distilled water and then fill her up with the proper amount of ELC and you should be fine.
