IDI Year Reccomendation and AC Advice

The wife is pushing me to to get a truck with AC. I currently own a 351w '87 F-150 which I bought with the AC gutted. I'm a Ford owner but have no experience with F-series AC systems.

In shopping for the replacement truck I've been looking for a 4.9 I6 for improved mileage and mechanical simplicity, but now I'm considering the early IDIs as they seem to be cheap, tough, and readily available.

What years of these trucks use the R12 refrigerant? I'm drawn toward the 83-87 6.9 IDI, but I'm not sure if the older ACs are more prone to failure or more costly to convert to the new refrigerant. Can R134-A be loaded into a R12 system with minor work?

If you own an older 83-94 IDI F-series please share any experience you've had maintaining or converting your AC system.

converting to R134-A usually requires replacing the reciever drier because it will plug up after the change, but most of the other components will handle the change just fine. we have had '83, '84, 90, 91 and 93 IDI trucks all of them were good running trucks for us. The engines will definitely outlast everything else in those trucks.
