to short of an exhaust system

I have a friend with a 6.0, today he unbolted his muffler, if you have been under a 6.0, there is the down pipe, cat, muffler, then tail pipe. He just removed from the cat back, leaving the 2 foot section of pipeing thats after the cat. My question is is this to short? will it hurt something being that short?

if it was a 7.3 I'd say no... however apparently the 6oh's you need to have them.
