Maximum weight in the bed?

I don't do a lot of heavy hauling with my truck, and I think the most I've had in the bed was about 1200 lbs of scrap iron, but I will say that it didn't feel sluggish at all and the rear end wasn't squatting much. Anyway, I'm looking at maybe buying a coal stove in the future and I've heard that coal tends to be pretty cheap if you pick it up at the breaker. I know I can pick up a ton without a problem, but if I were to build a "coal box" out of plywood and 2x4s for the sides how much more could I get? 3000lbs? 4000? I know...I know...just buy a trailer...lol

I have had 3000+# in the back of mine several times and have had no problem. It is like anything else when you have alot of weight it takes longer to stop.
