4X4 wont engage.
Hey guys, I'm helping my buddy out. He has a 01 F250 5.4L Auto and his 4X4 wont engage. It's the electronic shift on the fly. I can hear the motor on the TC try to engage but the 4X4 light wont come on. I don't think the motor is bad but I don't now why it wont engage. Any suggestions?

Does it go into 4x4 High? Or no 4x4 at all? Have you checked for any fault codes?

No 4X4 at all. the electric motor sounds like it is trying to engage like 3 times but the 4X4 light doesn't come on. then it stops trying. Doesn't throw any lights or anything. I don't have anything to full codes.

If you could get codes that would really be helpful. Some things come to mind based on past experience: faulty Xfer case motor, faulty Xfer case front or rear speed sensors. I would recommend diagnostics instead of just swapping out parts. See if you can find someone who can at least retrieve the codes for you.

but no lights come on like check engine or anything, so would it still throw a code?

Possibly, yes. If you can find the right scan tool, you should also monitor the contact plate pids to make sure they are switching properly as the different 4x4 requests are being commanded.

check for vacuum leaks as well.... if you havnt used the 4x4 for a while the seals on the hub can get cracked and torn and leak. if yours dont have vacuum... any 4x4 local shop should have a scanner u can use.
