POWERSTROKE 6.0

I have never owned a diesel and Ford makes a nice looking diesel from what I see from the other manufacturers. I have cash saved up for my truck and it seems that the 6.0 is in my future. I have read many many threads and articles on how poor this motor is unless I "bulletproof" it. So... here it comes.

If I look at a used truck 2005-2007, some with 130k or more miles do I need to to the studs and egr if I leave it stock?

For now the 6.4 and the 6.7 are out of my cash range.. I really do not want payments and REALLY dont want to go cummings/duramax.

The Ford King Ranch is what I want to get.
Is is mandatory to get 300-400k out of the truck to do the bulletproofing?

I have a friend that has a 6.0 stock 5speed no mods whatsoever and it has 268k on it for miles. Never had more that normal maintanence done to it. Is he a lucky one??
