Muffler back on........it sucks!

I was running just the cat for a long time, then for the last 3 months I was back to nothing but a straight pipe. The truck sounds awesome by itself, but pulling a heavy load it gets very obnoxious!

Tonight I just went out and put the muffler back on. It still sounds good, but it's just not as aggressive as I would like for my everyday driving. It will be a week or two before I get to tow anything heavy to see how it sounds then. Too bad there isn't something in between.

If it wasn't for the fifth wheel camper I would be fine with the straight pipe. Man it really barks and echos off that camper! I got tired of the wife's complaints and anyone else who had to travel behind us telling me that it was louder than a pack of Harleys.

I actually think it sounds better with just the cat and no muffler, but there is no way that I am putting that restrictive POS back on there unless I absolutely have to.

It really isn't about pleasing the wife. The sound of that straight pipe is 3 times more severe when the truck is under a heavy load. It is just too annoying when I am pulling the camper.

I can only imagine what it sounds like outside of the truck. I know for a fact that even with the windows open it is nowhere near as loud inside the cab as what the rest of the world is hearing. Let's put it this way......when my brother was following me (pulling the camper) in his dump truck with the windows up and he commented on how loud my truck was at WOT, it started to sink in how obnoxious it really was under a load. If only I could capture that empty truck 2500 rpm sound for all occasions it would be very sweet!

what type of muffler is it? is it louder then the straight pipe with the cat in place?

It's the MBRP muffler. I think the muffler is a little bit more quiet than just the cat. I liked the sound of the just the cat, but I don't want the restriction.

I had the same problem. Muffler was too quiet and straight pipe too loud. The answer was a Flowmaster Outlaw muffler. Just right.
