'08 side mirrors on a '03?

Are the '08 & up side mirrors electronically compatable on a '03 F350?

Not with the factory plug but if you are a lil bit electrical savvy, you can install them and make em work. Lotsa guys do that install and there's a thread for it too. Go to 99-03 exterior discussion and it's one of the sticky threads. I believe it's titled somethin like "08 mirror install"

Probably a dumb question, but are the mirrors being swapped out for looks, or for functionality? I would love to have the heated extendable towing mirrors on my 05 Ex as I just have the normal fold in ones now. Are the 08 style "better" than the older ones in terms of mechanicals, or is it just a style thing? Would I be better off looking for a set of 04-05 F series mirrors, to avoid most of the electrical fun and games (gotta love plug and play), or would it make sense to upgrade to the later style? Any thoughts?
