ball joints

might be a stupid question but how can you tell if your ball joints are going bad? i have an 2003 f-350 4x4 with the 7.3 and my front end is acting goofy i was wondering about the ball joints.i am tired of throwing money at the front end and not fixing the problem your help would be greatly appreacited thanks.

Jack it up enough to slide a pry bar or something under the wheel and pry it up a couple times and watch the ball joints. No loose movement should occur
