Did you recently have work done to the drivetrain? Does it come off somehow or is it like a slip ring? I ask because I've seen similar items on disconnected driveshafts while the vehicle was being worked on. The idea was to allow the DS to rest on that as opposed to the joints in order to prevent damage. But they came off the shaft rather easy.

Yeah my guess would be counter weight/ dampener. I know the 5.0 had them on stock d/s also.
