I have been helping my brother in law with a bad fuel situation. We found a black sludge every where and are having a heck of a time cleaning it out. We are having to remove all the banjo bolts and flush out the fuel rails etc...
ANYWAYS, I was talking to a semi mechanic friend of mine about it and he said he knew exactly what it was. The ethenol (among other items) they are using to make our diesel fuel now forms this black crap at the bottom of the fuel tanks as the tanks get hot(summer, tank heaters etc...). If it keeps going it will form little black pellets. Usually your alright but if the station is low and you fill up you just sucked the bottom dry, or if the station was just filled up and stirs up the tank then you get fuel, well then you just filled up with crap. The mechanic told me he had to drain and flush almost an entire fleet that filled up with bad fuel. So basically I am saying is...
1)Change your filter more often than normal.
2) If your station is getting fuel or just got fuel,Wait at least an hour before YOU get fuel or just go to another station.
