Shorted Block Heater?

Howdy Yall,
Last night when I got home, I had to chip ice off the connector for my block heater. The cover was on the plug end but during chipping it off, I guess the prongs got wet. Now the plug I usually plug it into (GFI) is tripping all the time. I assume it has to do with moisture but my question is would that damage the block heater? Thanks!
