Looking at getting a diesel

Over the past few days I have been doing some research here in regards to the 7.3 and 6.0 engines. My current truck is on the way out and it is time to replace it. I do have a farm and haul a fair bit of hay in the summer/fall along with jobs that require a truck. The truck will not be a daily driver but I would like something decent if my car is down for whatever reason.

I am looking at getting a F250 and based on my price range ($15000) am looking at 2000-2005 trucks. The 6.0 does have me a little concerned. From what I have read here, I should get an Oasis report and check to see if the truck has been chipped/programmed and rode hard. I have read on the EGR/EGR cooler issues and some of the turbo coking problems.

My question is this, is a 6.0 in the 150,000 mile range a good investment? I really don't want to buy a truck and then have to dump a ton of cash into it. Would a 2005 6.0 be better then the ones made prior to that?

In regards to transmissions, from what I have read the 5R100 is pretty good and is a better then the 4R100 that the 7.3 trucks have. Is that a correct assessment?

Are there any other suggestions on what I should look out for?

Welcome.. i personally would never own a 6.0 because I dont want to have the chance of anything going bad. my neighbor just got one and its been nothing but CRAP. sooo that being said i'd look for a 6spd 7.3 or a good 7.3, 4R100's arent terrible trannies, they just need to be taken care of well.
