Smile Thinking about Buying a Diesel

Hey Folks,
I'm giving serious consideration about buying a F-250 4x4 w/ a 6.4L Diesel. I need the heavier truck(I currently have an F-150 2x4 w/ a 4.6L coupled w/ 3.08:1 rear end) to haul my 1955 Packard Clipper from CA to VA, amongst other uses. My brother is a very experienced (he has all three Ford Certs) mechanic and has told me (unofficially) that the 6.4L diesel has "issues". Should I go with the 6.8L gas V-10, or the bigger F-350 w/ a 7.8L diesel? I would much prefer the diesel but have heard mixed reviews about the 6.4. Some help would be appreciated....thanks

Uhm all the F series(250-550) have the same engine.. i dunno bout the higher #'s anyway theres no such thing as a 7.8. anyway the 6.4 is a great engine.. as far as i can tell any of the earlier issues are resolved. I myself have a 7.3 and i'll drive it til it explodes. i mean that! 94-03 was the 7.3 03-07(i believe) is the 6.0(plagued with problems) and 08-10 is 6.4.. correct me if im wrong. the 6.7 is coming out next year supposed to be a tank of an engine more power and better mileage.
The v10 is a POS that eats gas like no ones business and shoots spark plugs out!
My honest opinion is to go find a good used F250 with a 7.3 its not the fastest but it'll pull all day and its solid and reliable. hope this helps

Everyone I know likes their 6.4s pretty good, never had any problems at all, minus the bad MPG they get. But yeah you cant go wrong with a 7.3
