1996 F-250
Hello everyone,
I just recently purchased a 1996 F-250 Ext.Cab,long box 7.3 4x4. I too am new to the diesel market and had a few questions. I noticed in the morning my truck tends to smoke a bit until it warms up.......is this normal? What should I look for or watch out for? I also noticed that the turbo isn't as loud as other 7.3's i've ridden in before. Is this normal? All in all it seems to be a very sound running truck. The mileage was a concern at first, but I was advised by other diesel owners that if you take care of it I should get quite a few more miles out of the truck. Right now i'm sitting on 163,000 miles. If any of you have any suggestions or tips please let me know! |

white smoke is either from steam or a temp difference, i.e. hot new exhaust hitting stone cold tailpipe...black smoke indicates unburnt fuel..which may also occur in the mornings depending on a couple of factors...diesel fuel is less refined than gasoline...i.e. its closer to crude than gas, so it is thincker and thus congeels when its cold...if its smoking black, try running codes for injector failure, or put a fuel conditioner/injector cleaner in your tank...
hope this helps... wes |

I have a 96 as well. The smoke is fairly normal, especially on cold mornings. Once she warms up, she's fine.
As far as turbo sounds go, doing something with you cat (hint hint) will make a HUGE difference. |
