how often to change tranny fluid

i went to my oil change guy friday. i told him it was about time to service the tranny. he told me not to do it. said that when u change the fluid alot of times it will cause the tranny to go out, the gunk it what it keeps it going he says. bs or what. now that i have the ts chip i scared of killing my tranny and was going to keep the fluid changed regularly, hope fully to keep it from dying just yet. what do u guys think. it has 140,000 its had only been changed once.

if it has 140k and only one change thats when changing it can mess things up but if you do change it replace the filter also but i think they say like every 30 or 45k if your going to change them on a regular basis

to change the filter the pan has to be dropped and the filters just pull off but it takes a little pulling but dont pry or anything they just pull straight down, so when you do it you have to buy the filter and a pan gasket and all the fluid and it would probably take about an hour or so.

For your tranny fluid maintanence schedule is every 30,000 miles. Now changing the fluid yourself is not hard. What you have to do is drain the fluid and then remove the tranny pan. Once you have the tranny pan removed the filter is a black plastic rectangle that pulls down it has an o-ring on it that is orange make sure you get that o-ring out of the hole it is in if it is not on the filter. You will get more fluid when you pull the filter out. Then put a new filter inplace making sure the new filter has the new o-ring on it. Then replace the tranny pan gasket. Install the tranny pan back in place and insert the bolts that hold it in place. Do not tighten bolts to tight as you may pinch the gasket and cause a tranny pan leak. I suggest tightening the tranny pan bolts down snug then one 1/2 turn to fully tighten them. Then refill the tranny through the dipstick tube. Should need about 8 quarts of fluid. Start the truck up get it to normal operating temp. Also while holding your foot on the brake. Run the tranny through the gears. Then recheck fluid level as the is running. If it is low add fluid while checking it often. With a tranny to much fluid can be just as bad as low fluid level. I suggest having the fluid level half way between hot full and cold full marks on the dipstick. Once the fluid level is correct. Take it for a test drive. When test drive is complete recheck fluid level, if the fluid level is correct, shut the truck down and check for leaks from the tranny pan. If no leaks and truck drives and operates normal you have completed the tranny fluid and filter change.

Just a suggestion but if your going to do a tranny flush make sure the shop leaves your old filter in while they do the flush so all the old contaminents end up in your old filter. It takes 4-5 more quarts to do it this way but at least when you put your new filter in the tranny should be clean so your not fouling your new filter.
