Harmonic Sound When Cold

When temperatures are below freezing and I start my truck up cold I am noticing a harmonic wailing sort of sound coming from somewhere under the truck. It stops sporadically and then comes right back. You can't really hear it inside the cab. It's not very loud but definitely not something I've ever heard when temperatures were warmer.

When the truck starts to warm up the sound goes away completely.

The truck runs just fine. Drives fine.

I am just wondering what the sound might be. Is that a normal thing with a Diesel engine?

Like a whistling? That would be your turbo spooling up, mine does the same thing.

Not really like that sound. I'm used to the turbo sound. This is deeper sounding. Almost like a horn blowing but quietly... Not loud and shrill. Just a steady hum that cuts in and out at random. But then totally stops when the truck warms up.

It will do it the most when it is just sitting in the driveway idling before I get in and drive off.

I created a thread about this a few days ago. I posed a few videos of what mine sounds like when doing this. Take a look at them and see if yours sounds the same. Many people commented and said that theirs makes the same noise so I am not too worried about it.

Mine sounds different to me. I took a video and the first 10 seconds or so seems to clearly demonstrate what it is doing. Sounds like a beep or tone cutting in and out at random.

Not sure if the link above is the way to do this or not. Will try again if this is wrong.

I have the exact same noise and have since I bought it with 3 miles on it. l notice it when it's cold out when remote starting in the garage. I also can't hear it in the truck and it goes away when warm. No issues driving except a little noisy diesel clatter that started about 400 miles in. Otherwise it runs great with about 1200 miles on the clock so far.

After listening to the video I definitely don't have that noise, or at least have never heard it. Was that on the passenger side?

These videos show the sound mine is making best. It sounds a lot like yours to me.

Only difference is in your's it sort of sounds like it winds up. Mine is instant no noise / noise / no noise. The tone cuts in at a tone and volume that is pretty much instant and constant and then suddenly stops only to return again randomly. And, once warm it's gone entirely.

I'm not going to let it worry me because it hasn't caused any noticeable difference in performance or anything else. I've just been curious what it might be and why only in cold weather.
