What is this for????

Found this today while installing my light bar between my tailgate and rear bumper. I have no clue what it's for other than maybe some kind of theft protection??? Doesn't seem to do anything. Located on right side below the tailgate. What is it???

So I wonder if it can be removed? It's in my way. Lol. Just don't want my tailgate coming off.

It forces your tailgate to stay centered between the two hinge pins when you open and close. If you remove it, you might find the tailgate sliding to the right or left and dropping off one of the hinge pins
