What kind of oil to use and how often?

Well I've got 4900 on the new girl and was just wondering what kind of oil to use and how often to change it. All my other trucks I would change it every 5k and my mechanic uses Rotella oil and I believe it's 15w40. Thanks!

Congrats on the new girl. I change mine every 5k miles and have always used 10w30 year 'round with no issues.

Rotella T6. The manual describes the oil to use based on your driving conditions. I do a lot of idling and short trips, so it recommends synthetic.

If you want to learn about your oil, go to BlackStone-labs.com and have a free kit sent to you. You send it back with oil and some money. They email you a great report. I don't trust the truck to tell me. I trust the analysis to guide me in making that decision.

I learned about the oil analysis from this forum, so I really appreciate the information we can learn on here. Good luck with your new ride! They are awesome!

I'm not for certain, but do some research about it. I thought the 6.7 is known for a lot of fuel ending up in the oil due to DPF regens. That's why Amsoil came out with OE branded oil that is less price since you have to change it more often.

Just picked up a 13, Saturday and read the diesel engine supplement manual. Regular conditions on the engine you can use 10W-30. Severe duty (towing more than 1000 miles, excessive idling, stop and go traffic driving, or if you use Bio diesel any kind from B6-B20 you should use 5W-40 or 10W-40.
