Add Rapid Heat and Dual Alts? How Difficult?

As the title says, anyone have any info on this? Can you go to the dealer, if the price is right which it wont be, and have them install those or is it pretty easy to put in?

new belt and alt for the dual alts

rapid heater, tie in to the fuse box

What am I missing?

I watched a youtube video where a guy put dual alts in his 7.3, pretty straight forward. remove belt, install alt, wire up, reinstall new belt. its probably more complex than that but i cant recall. id imagine its about the same for 6.7s

as for the heater, are you talking about the supplemental cab heater? if so i recall i read a thread where someone said it wasnt possible it had to be installed at the factory.

I know vague as hell sorry

ALT Options

7.3'swere simple the 6.7 is PCM operated

I would find a good replacement for the single like from DC Power and have one great alts instead of 2 so so alts

supplemental heat = no idea but you sure made it sound easy

I was wondering about the dual alt myself. I wanted that option, but mine has the HD one. I would still like to add the second alt for the light package I plan to add, but wonder what exactily it will take. (Second alt, mounting brackets, wiring, and PCM update??) Might have to ask the dealer next time I'm in for service.

you would still be better off with a better single ALT with a greater output at Idle and cooler running
also you would be money ahead IMHO and have your good take off as a spare vs tryng to figure out which one of your two alts crapped out and where to find a replacement on a weekend

I too was researching on installing dual alternators. You MUST change the water pump as well.
Here is an install diagram w/ parts needed..
https://www.fleet.ford.com/truckbbas...ml/Q-160R1.pdf

I ended up scratching the idea of adding a dual alternator, but I plan on upgrading to a DC power or Mechman alternator instead which will bump up the idle amperage and overall amperage pretty much to the same amount as a dual alternator setup.

There were some threads about adding the supplemental heater back in 2011. If my memory serves me right the cost was around $2000 installed. It really puzzles me when dealers in northern climates order trucks without the option to put on their lots. For $250 (I think) it's a no brainer to me.

You only need the HD alt for the Rapid Heat. You don't need the dual Alts for that option. So upgrading the Alternator would be fairly simple

The real challenge is tearing the whole dash out to install the rapid heat element in the heater box.

It is automatic, No switch to turn it on/off.. So some programming has to go into the PCM to let it know you have the element
