prefered towing RPM range
What is the prefered towing rpm range for this engine? When I bought it, I asked the dealer and was told, "just drive and let the transmission take care of things". I only drive 60-65 when pulling the 5th wheel and with the 3.31 gears I wonder if maybe I should be keeping it in fifth gear instead of letting it go to sixth gear. What are the rest of you doing? 5th wheel weighs around 13000.

Use Tow/Haul mode and let her roll. If you're coming up a hill and it's jumping between gears or starting to lug 6th, lock it out of 6th until you crest the hill.

Push the Tow/Haul button and forget about it.
The computers have done an excellent job of finding the right gear for my loads/grades. I never lock a gear out , Unless I know I'm coming into a steep down grade and want to get the exhaust braking going before starting down the grade. Example there is a 12% grade with a 25 mph speedlimit near here. Bringing my Mini-Excavator at 10,000lbs down that grade, I lock out all but 1st gear before I start rolling and the truck will hold the load at 3400 rpms and 25 mph down the hill. I've never noticed my tranny hunting gears even pulling my 13,000lb horse trailer on 7-8% grades. |
