I'd read about how sensitive the 6.7 engine is to fuel problems and really agonized over it, but the more I looked into it the less concerned I got. Sure the problems I read about were significant and very expensive to fix, but I came to the following conclusions:
1) The people (for the most part) that were having significant issues probably went from a gas truck to a diesel truck without realizing that the engines require different care and probably didn't take the time to research them.
2) The salespeople do not know much about diesel engines and in some cases provide wrong info to the new owner.
as a result the new owner did a bad thing to his truck (like putting DEF in the fuel tank) without realizing what he did and was berating Ford for a poor design/maintenance/warranty. Just be sure to read the owners manual and the diesel supplement for sure! And check in at this forum if you have any questions. Just be aware that you can not go to WalMart to get parts for your truck (well - some things you can if you know what you're doing).
I was very concerned when I bought my truck in Feb, but the gas engines just would not be adequate. (I went from an 8.1 gas) So I crossed my fingers and bought the diesel. I've got 12k miles on it in about 4 months and really really like it. It's turned out to be a good choice. Now that I have some experience with the truck, I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but maybe an extra option or two.
As for what I think is the worst in the design of the truck is the engine oil minder - it should show a percentage of oil life left instead of just "OK" or "Change oil soon". It's a little hard to do sometimes when you're 1500 miles from home. And no I don't trust the oil change places to do it right and didn't on my gas vehicles either. So if that's the worst - you'll be fine with the truck. I run about 7000 miles between oil changes and about half is towing 9500# trailers.
