Changed to mobil 1 5-40 turbo diesel oil-Loss of MPG and now have a knock

Just switched to Mobil 1 5w-40 turbo diesel full syn oil the other day. I swear I have lost almost 2mpg with it. Now everytime I let it idle, I can hear a knock or the typewriter noise. I can even hear it while driving slow and there is somthing around to echo off of. I have always wanted to try this oil out. Can't believe the difference this is. I can't bring myself to drain the oil yet.
Ive got $150 in this oil change, so ill just wait a little longer. Can't wait to switch back to Motorcraft 10-30. Anyone else have this happen? I know I've heard of people talking about the knock after an oil change but don't know what oil was used. Truck has 26k on it.

I was tempted to do the samething and switch, but I change my oil every 5K miles so I stuck with Motorcraft 10-30. Sounds like I made the right call! BTW, No typewriter noise as some on here have complained about.

Strange that it caused that. I ran the same oil in my 6.0 for 2 years no issues. Hopefully you don't blowup another 6.7 mystic lol

Alberta stroker, I know man, I am a big mobil 1 fan, I love their oil. I've always condsidered it to be among the best. Maybe the new engine doesn't like it as much as the 10-30 motorcraft, anyway thats what will be going back in it.

Stroker8, here is some good reading for you, if you haven't seen this thread before, this was posted while it blew up.

180 miles on truck, something is broke!!!

Wow, that was just bad luck!
Hopefully, the same won't happen this time around.
Getting back to the knocking, I wonder if you have to add the same amount when using Syn??? I know it shouldn't matter right but I have heard in some cases where not putting in as much as conventional oil fixes this problem?

Running Rotella T6 5W40 synthetic....no noises to this point, and no loss in mileage.

Rotella is my other favorite, I run it in my turbo bike, dirt bike and track bike. Great oil. I'm gonna check the oil again in the truck in a few. 5 mins after I got home I checked it, it was right up on the min line.

I'm wondering if it wasn't more the switch to a different weight more than the switch to synthetic. I'm posting this article to spread a little info. There's a lot of preference's in oils, one claiming to better than the other and such. This article by Blackstone Labs breaks it down. This is also why I don't waste money on expensive oils, like Amsoil or Royal Purple. I buy Motorcraft or Rotella because it's typically the cheapest. Regardless, it's a good read.

Agree....Mobil's TD 5W40 is an excellent oil as well.

What you are seeing is most likely due to the change in viscosity.

The 5W40 will run thicker at temperature than the 10W30 you had in there.

Where are you located? Is is getting cold? Maybe the diesel you are buying is a winter blend that is robbing you of a couple of mpg. Just a thought.

Since the 5W40 is recommended for severe duty, I don't think you have anything to worry about from an engine protection standpoint.
