So, for you guys that now have some miles on your trucks, how much DEF are you using? While waiting for mine to arrive, the dealer is telling me it will need a fillup every 7,500 miles about the same time you change the oil.
What consumption are you guys seeing running empty and what are you seeing towing heavy?
Checker had DEF on sale today for $4.99 a gallon so I couldn't resist going ahead and getting a 2.5 gallon jug :thumb:
I read that someone was ablr to get Peak DEF from Wal-Mart, but I've searched my local Wal-Marts and can't find it. Does anyone have a Wal-Mart SKU for it?
I roughly estimate that I get about 1000 mpg towing and 1200 mpg not towing. I added 4 gallons yesterday and had 600 miles left. I have run about 6100 miles since I last filled the DEF tank.
I am seeing about $5/gallon at the parts stores here. The dealer wants $10/gallon.
Some of the Pilot Fuel stations are starting to sell DEF out at the Diesel pumps, through a separate pump. I just put some in mine a couple of weeks ago and it was like $2.79/gal
Good question, and answers.. I haven't had to fill mine yet...I've only put 1200 miles on my 2011.
Are there any differences in specs for the motorcraft/ford DEF and regular stuff from Walmart or Napa? I can't imagine there is, but I don't want to have to listen to the dealer whining if I'm not buying it from them. I have zero interest, simply on grounds of principle, in buying from the dealer and getting ripped, even if it's for only a few bucks.
It shouldn't matter who made the DEF as long as it is API certified. I even told the dealership parts guy that is was half price across the street. He didn't believe me I guess. I was in NAPA when he called to verify.
You will have to fill it about every 6000 to 7500 miles depending on how you tow. I've got 15,000 miles now and I've added about 9 gallons so far When the warning light comes on, I'll swing by a parts store or truck stop and grab a couple 2.5 gallon jugs. It's not that big of deal.
I had to add 5 gallons DEF fluid at 6000 miles . I don't think it was full from the factory. Walmart here has DEF for $11.87 for 2 1/2 gallons and Oriellys has same size for $11.99. I was surprised Walmart was almost the same as Oriellys.
Can you post up a Walmart SKU or part number? When I search online I see where a bunch of Walmarts in Canada are selling it, but I haven't been able to find any selling it in the Denver area yet.
I had to fill mine today. The dealer had done it the 2 previous times. I have 15,000 miles on the truck and change my oil every 5,000 miles. In the last 5,000, I've towed a 12,500 lb trailer 1,500 miles. I tow between 60-65 mph. I had to put in a little over 2 1/2 gal.
I'm at 4300 miles, and haven't had to add any yet. No real hauling, and only a couple of 3+ hour highway trips. Bought some at Flying J just in case. I think it was 13.99 for 2.5 gallons.
With 0 towing and 30hrs of Idle time... roughly 3k miles. System information on my truck showed it was at below half tank.
However, this could be due to my commute its about 2.5 miles to work with many stops. I only get about 14.7mpg.. This weekend before I went on a trip i picked up the 2 gallons below and i averaged 20.2 both ways of my trip at 68-75 mph.. that was awesome
Went to dealer and picked up 2 gallons and it took both of them no problem.
Mine said 800 miles to go at about 4,000 miles, but as many have stated here & in other threads, they don't ship the trucks full and a lot of dealers don't top them off before delivery.
I swung by the dealer and told him that the light came on early (should be roughly around the time of an oil change) and that I never got the half full message and they agreed to top it off, free of charge. Currently about to cross the 5k mark. Maybe 1k towing the TT.
1-I would love to ditch all of those things but I live in Colorado on the Front Range and the rig would never pass the mandatory emissions inspections. Way too much work trying to put that stuff back on every 2 years.
2-I built my 6.0 and all it did was blow up and then I got lots of hassles from Ford about fixing it. In the end they did but I still had to sell it because it was so unreliable. I lost a ton of money on it.
3-I just sold my Dodge in preparation for the arrival of the new Ford. I had tons of people look at it and every one of them said it was a big plus that the rig was totally stock, had no mods or chips, etc. I sold it in 1 day for full price.
I built race cars in my younger days and I really enjoyed building my trucks not to mention the impovements in performance and fuel mileage. But those days are over for me.....most likely............at least until I'm out of warranty
