Rear diff heat sink cover
So it seems that some trucks have the fins on the rear diff cover and some dont, mine being one of them. What is the reasoning behind why some trucks have them and some dont. I find it odd that my 2009 had it and my 2011 doesn't. What package is it part of?
What is the aftermarket unit that you guys recommend for best cooling? |

I have the same truck as you. Mine's a SRW CC long bed Lariat FX and my rear diff cover is the aluminum finned one. Is yours DRW?

Mines a SRW, CC Lariat FX4 short box with skid plates, the cover is just a plain round looking diff cover

I asked the same question last month. Mine does not have it either and the dealership cannot figure out why. When they called Ford they were told it has the correct cover and when they pull the part up on the computer it only shows one part # and not two, that being the finned one with a conformation through another dealership who had one in stock that the part is actually aluminum and finned.
My Parts Dept friend asked the question... Two F-350s back into the same concert block at the same time, one with and one without, what part will both trucks get? He cannot get an answer! One of the Techs said it maybe because they had problems with the 3.55 E-locker and this was their fix, a new rear end assembly. This is just what a Tech thought again, we have not got a straight answer yet.... more like don't worry about it, Ford knows with they are doing.

I have a job 1 F-250 XLT CC with 3.55 and the E-Locker, my diff cover is aluminum finned. That's crazy that you guys have plain diff covers.

The Parts Manager at my dealership is a good friend of mine and we spent about an hour referencing this topic. He pulled up several different VIN #s with all different configurations and options all of which show the exact same part number and that being the heat sink cover. We called Ford and they informed us that not having the heat sink is the correct configuration. Either no one really knows what the hell is going on or Ford is not communicating very well with their dealerships. It does trouble me that there would be such a noticeable difference with the same model year trucks without an explanation to back it.

3.55 with the e-locker here. Maybe it's a matter of what Job it is. Mine's a job 2 build. Well at least those without the finned cover have means for warranty work on their rear diffs if they ever have heat problems. I'd recommend sending your oil in for testing when it comes time to change it to see how it's handling the extra heat.
