Can you expand on your question? The manual says to look on both sides of the dip stick and use the highest level.

Thanks for your reply. I am new and still trying to sort out how to use this forum. I have a hard time seeing the oil level on the dip stick. The truck has 2800 miles on it and maybe the oil is too clean to see well yet. When you check the level twice in succession the the oil in the dipstick tube interferes with a clear reading. I do have the cable dipstick. It would help if the bulb on the dip stick had hatch marks on both sides. I had no problem reading the level on my 01 Powerstroke. Thanks you.

With 2800 miles your oil should already be a lovely shade of black. If you're not getting any black on the dipstick, then it's low by quite a bit. Make sure you check it after the truck has sat turned off for at least 20 mins to get a truly accurate reading. If it's still not reading on the stick, then I'd take it to the dealer, unless you've already changed it, then I'd just add oil until it starts to read.

CASCADE, I'm having difficulty reding mine too. I think it is rubbing the oil off on the long tube when it is pulled out. I can check it 3 times in a row and get a different reading each time.

Msijohns I find the way that shows the oil level the clearest is after my truck sets overnight and I check the level just once. I know the manuals say let set 20 minutes after operating temperature and check but that is when it is the hardest to see on the dipstick. If you check it twice I think your are right about the oil in the tube interfering. I had no trouble checking the oil on my 01 7.3.
