I am looking to upgrade from my 2001 7.3. I found two trucks, one is a 2011 F250 King Ranch with 122xxx miles on it and the other is a 2013 F350 fx4 with 131xxx miles on it. After trade in on my truck they are both right around what I got approved for. My question is, should I be nervous with these miles? I would rather have less miles but it doesn't look like I could a afford a truck with less miles. I've had my truck for 8 years and only put 62k miles on it so I don't put a ton of miles on trucks. Will they easily last until 220k miles? Whatever truck I get it will get fully deleted and tuned. I'm just ready to upgrade but don't know a whole lot about these trucks and doing all the research that I can. Thanks for the help.
11 had some teething problems, mainly exhaust valves. 11-12 have a ceramic turbo bearing, and the early tunes where hard on them.
If you are stretching yourself financially and something brakes it could likely be expensive. A few have had main bearing issues as of late. Another problem is the fuel system, not only is it susceptible to water contamination, they are able to deliver way more fuel and timing, via tuning, than is healthy for the rods. If you don't know the history on the truck then why did they dump it?
Both being over 5yrs/100k is outside of being able to get a Ford ESP, which is the only warranty worth its weight. If you delete it then the warranty gets deleted too.
Will they easily last until 220k?
This is the other side of the coin. They should last a long time. I personally know 2 trucks that are high mileage and work hard every day. One is an 11 pushing 450k and tows every day, this truck has had rings and a turbo. Its been rode hard and neglected. The second is a 13 pushing 350k and the only problem I've heard of was an injector hold down. This is my 3rd door neighbors bosses farm truck that they bought used at 300k. I have heard through them internets of a 6.7 powerstroke hitting 800k+, take that for what its worth, some dude on the internet. No proof of it sadly.
I have 98k on my 12 and have had a radiator a front main seal and vacuum pump gasket...
Also if you tow a lot there is no comparison to the scorpion, a friend of mine just confessed to me that he crossed the scales a while back in his 14 350 straight axle at 50000 gross. Of course the next day he went out and bought a Kenworth..
Personally I would keep looking for a lower mileage tuck with good history. Spit shine the 7.3 and sell it yourself. BUT if you want something you KNOW will last, you already have it in your driveway.
Going from a 2001 7.3 to a 6.7 is seen as a downgrade by many people.
For the price of some repairs for that 6.7 you could completely overhaul your 7.3 to a zero-time engine. It's also simpler to work on, less parts and gets better mileage than the 6.7. You really want to "upgrade" to this?
I recently upgraded from a 01 cummins to a 14 F250.i love it.mine has low miles at 40k.im only 25 and I'm about the luxury side now more than the horsepower and burning rubber.i love the truck only time will tell with reliability. I've put a little over a thousand miles on mine city driving.
Take your time and find the right one.i looked for probably 2-3 months and the truck I bought happened to be 30 mins away at a dealer.i was prepared to drive to Kentucky to buy a different one with lower miles but didnt.
