Possible source for engine noise...thoughts?
For those who didn't read my earlier threads, I have an RPM/throttle related engine noise that is a steady/rhythmic ticking that increases or decreases with RPM. It is very regular, and I just don't think it's the typewriter noise. It has always sounded like either an exhaust leak or a noise injector, and it is related to throttle position and does not occur at idle. The truck seems to just run more rough when the noise is there, and I don't feel I have all the power I should. I've been all over/under the truck and had no luck finding anything that resembles an exhaust leak indicator.
Over the last several weeks, I've noticed the fuel pump getting louder. I have checked the water separator multiple times with nothing but pristine diesel. I've also on a few occasions noticed a strange whining/squealing sound from the driver's side of the motor when turning the key on with the engine off.
So last night I cycled the key to the on position with the hood up, and I heard the fuel pump kick on. I then heard the irregular squealing noise coming from the engine mounted fuel filter. It lasted for 30 seconds or so as the system was primed and then stopped. I tried it again later, and when it was squealing, I "jiggled" the engine mounted fuel filter a bit, and it promptly stopped squealing.
This morning, on the way to work the truck was much quieter. The noise was still there, but barely audible. However, about 5 miles into the drive, I was stopped at a light in traffic, and I thought I could faintly hear the squeal from the engine/filter, and upon driving a bit more, the noise became louder again.
What would cause the engine mounted filter to squeal like that? It almost sounds like a squeal you get from your home faucet when the tap is only part-way open. Is it possible that I have a leak that is somehow drawing air into the fuel system and causing noisy injectors? Or possibly a restriction? And yes, every time I have checked the diesel/water separator, I have fully tightened the valve. Should I just go ahead and replace the fuel filters with only 2200 miles on the truck?
Any thoughts are appreciated.
