Idea for push button exhaust brake

Alright guys so I have had my truck for almost a year now and pull a 10 000lb 2 horse trailer with living quarters. The truck is also my daily driver.

Frankly i am very dissapointed with the stock "exhaust brake" and have been thinking of ways to make it better. I came accros BD Diesel's controller for the 6.4
BD Power - Product: 6.4L Variable Vane Exh Brake

I dont think it would be very difficult to make one for the 6.7 and here is what I am thinking.

Requirements for it to operate:
Zero throttle position
Less then max exhaust back pressure. Anyone know what this is??

The VGT actuator i believe is electric and hydraulic, please correct me if i am wrong.

We need to make a controller that sends a signal to fully close the vanes if there is zero throttle and less then maximum exhaust back pressure.

Now from what i have read in the 6.7 H and S bible, there is a backpressure sensor but i do not know what kind of signal it sends back to computer (voltage or current) Same thing for the throttle position sensor and VGT actuator.

Does anyone know what these values are?

Also it would be super simple to make it identical to the BD one by tapping into the tow/haul button to achieve downshifting.

Sorry about the long post but lets put our heads together and come up with something!

The 6.7 already does this function.

I realize the 6.7 already has an exhaust brake but i feel that it does not close the vanes enough in order to increase it's effectiveness.

What i want to do is when the switch is activated, it fully closes the vanes until the max exhaust back pressure is reached, then it would open them until exhaust back pressure decrease, then close the veins again etc etc

That sounds like alot of strain on an already proven weak turbo

The newer hyper-balanced ones seem to be stronger and under stock conditions i dont think it would be a problem. but i am not a turbo expert by any means.
Does anyone know the max exhaust back pressure for the 6.7?

I like the idea. I think the turbo is plenty strong if kept within its operating limits. I wish i was more mechanically inclined so i could contribute something.

If anyone knows the following information could you please share it?

Throttle position voltage range and voltage for zero throttle
VGT actuator voltage for fully open and fully closed
Exhaust back pressure voltage readings and max pressure allowed

Well guys i found some info about the exhaust pressure sensor from the H&S Bible

70 psi=3.75V
60 psi=3.25V
50 psi=2.7V

The 6.4 can sustain 70psi of back pressure according to BD Diesel so it would be safe to say the 6.7 can handle 60psi?

These values aren't exact but are fairly close from reading off of their graph

If anyone with a H&S tuner that can read the back pressure could you see what you get when the exhaust break is active? Could you also include the boost number associated with it?

Does anyone know what the vgt actuator needs for voltage for veins fully open and fully closed?

Alright guys i found some info on the vgt actuator
DUTY CYCLE % AMPS
0 0
5 0.425

So after finding this out i cut the wire from the vgt actuator, ran it to my multimeter, then back to the pcm.

I did some driving around town today with no trailer and found at idle it is at 85% duty cycle, driving around in stop and go traffic ranges from 60 to 85% duty cycle. i went down some decent hills, downshift into 4th so rpms were above 2500 and what did i notice??? The vgt duty cycle ranged from 45 to 60%!!! this did generate a peak of 4psi of boost and held 3 psi of boost.

So from these findings it appears ford does not close the veins for exhaust braking... is that false advertising on their part?

On the plus side this means i can improve the exhaust braking with my controller i am thinking of!

Does anyone know what backpressure this engine can handle before valve float occurs?
